Indigenous Voices

October is Indigenous Peoples' Month in the Philippines, but for me, celebrating our Indigenous communities shouldn't be limited to just one month. It's a year-round commitment to understanding, respecting, and supporting their rich cultures and ongoing struggles.

Think about the Ifugao rice terraces. They've been cultivating rice using techniques passed down through generations for centuries. It's not just farming; it's a testament to their deep connection with the land and their ingenuity. Or consider the traditional healing practices of many Indigenous groups—knowledge that's often more effective than modern medicine. These aren't just traditions. They're invaluable resources.

This month, let's go beyond the usual celebrations. Let's actively support Indigenous-owned businesses. Let's visit their communities and learn from them directly. Let's amplify their voices and advocate for their rights – their rights to their land, their traditions, and their self-determination. It’s not just about acknowledging their existence. It's about building a future where their cultures thrive.
