18 Days to End VAW

One in five Filipino women has experienced violence from a partner. These are not just statistics; they represent real lives shattered by abuse. During this year's 18-day campaign to end violence against women, let's examine the legal tools we have to fight back. This article highlights two key laws: Republic Act No. 9262 and the amended Republic Act No. 8353.

Republic Act No. 9262 (Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004): This law provides comprehensive protection to women and their children from all forms of abuse, including physical, sexual, psychological, and economic violence. It recognizes the interconnectedness of these forms of abuse and provides legal remedies like protection orders and support services.

Republic Act No. 8353 (Anti-Rape Law of 1997), as amended by RA 11648: This law criminalizes rape with stricter penalties for offenders. The 2022 amendment significantly strengthens the law by recognizing any non-consensual sexual act as rape, regardless of force or threat. It also increases penalties and addresses sexual violence in conflict situations.

These laws are crucial in the fight against VAW, but continued awareness, education, and enforcement are needed to create a society free from this type of violence.
